Prototyping Tools

Gone are the days of creating paper prototypes – see ya paper and cardboard – now we have web apps and a short list of my 3 favorite prototyping tools!
prototyping tools
Omnigraffle: Great cross-platform software tool for creating wireframes, and comes with an iPad version for prototyping on the go. Only available for Mac.

ScratchPad: It hasn’t publicly launched yet, but this tool is sort of the Pinterest of web design tools. Anytime you visit a website where you like the way a button looks, or how a headline is styled, or a call-to-action is placed, you can clip those elements and store them. When you’re re-designing your website or making updates, you can look back at all the smart design decisions you liked.

Pencil: This is an open-source, cross-platform tool for website prototyping, including mobile prototypes.

Kuhler

We have begun playing around with Adobe’s web-hosted application called Kuler – which allows you to share, explore, and create color themes. We found it useful for generating color themes that can inspire projects that may be stuck in the mud or need a little creative kick in the pants.  It allows you to “experiment quickly with color variations and browse thousands of themes from the Kuler community”. By the way, the Kuler community os active and large – boasting approximately 70,000 monthly uniques and receives several hundred palette uploads each day. Our favorite feature is the photo color palette generator where you  can upload one of your photos, and Kuler will automatically create  a color palette based on the colors found in your photo. It is definitely worth a look see – check out Adobe Kuler.

Contribute to Our Growing List of Web Design Resources

Wow! I can’t believe October is winding down and soon we will be into November and the end of year holidays. For me, this time of year is the busiest and I can sometime have the tendency to lose focus on my initial goals for the year (have you reached all the goals you set for yorself this year?). Anyway, one of my goals for Designer’s Mind is to build the most complete list of design resouces.

I was recently inspired by Steven from VandelayDesign who has put together an excellent list of resources for web deigners. He includes image pickers, fonts, CSS layouts, dead link checkers, color pickers and many more – 77 resources to be exact. I hope to build on Steven’s list over the next 30 – 60 days. I am hoping that you will help and contribute to our list.

Also, you may want to peak at Jason Bartholme’s blog – a great blog for resources, including a list of 70+ JavaScript Resources for Every Web Developer

I look forward to your comments…
